엄마

고등학생이 돼서야 알았다. 다른 집에선 계란 프라이를 그렇게 해서 먹는다는 것을. 어느 날 친구집에서 저녁을 먹는데 반찬으로 계란 프라이가 나왔다. 밥상머리에 앉은 사람의 수만큼 계란도 딱 세 개만 프라이되어 나온 것이다. 순간 ‘장난하나?’ 생각했다. 속으로 어이없어 하며 옆 친구에게 한마디 따지려는 순간, 환하게 웃으며 젓가락을 놀리는 친구의 옆모습을 보고 깨닫고 말았다. 남들은 그렇게 먹는다는 것을.
그때까지도 난 다른 집들도 계란 프라이를 했다 하면, 4인 가족 기준으로 한 판씩은 해서 먹는 줄 알았다. 우리엄마는 손이 그렇게 컸다. 과자는 봉지가 아니라 박스 째로 사왔고, 콜라는 병콜라가 아니라 PET병 박스였으며, 삼계탕을 했다 하면 노란 찜통-그렇다, 냄비가 아니라 찜통이다-에 한꺼번에 닭을 열댓 마리는 삶아 식구들이 먹고, 친구들까지 불러 먹이고, 저녁에 동네 순찰을 도는 방범들까지 불러 먹이곤 했다.
엄마는 또 힘이 장사였다. 하룻밤 자고 나면 온 집안의 가구들이 완전 재배치되어 있는 일이 다반사였다. 가구 배치가 지겹거나 기분 전환이 필요하면 그 즉시 결정해 시간에 구애받지 않고 가구를 옮기기 시작했다.
이런 일이 잦으니 작은 책상이나 액자 따위를 살짝 옮겼나보다 생각하면 오산이다. 이사할 때나 옮기는 장롱이나 침대 같은 가구가 이 방에서 저 방으로 끌려 다녔으니까. 오줌이 마려워 부스스 일어났다가, 목에 수건을 두르고 목장갑을 낀 채 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 커다란 가구를 혼자 옮기고 있는 ‘잠옷바람의 아줌마가 연출하는 어스름한 새벽녘 퍼포먼스’의 기괴함은 목격해보지 않은 사람은 모른다. 새벽 세 시 느닷없이 깨어진 후 팬티만 입은 채 장롱 한 면을 보듬어 안고 한 달 전 떠나왔던 바로 그 자리로 장롱을 네 번째 원상복귀 시킬 때 겪는 반수면 상태에서의 황당함도 경험해보지 않은 사람은 모른다.
재수를 하고도 대학에 떨어진 후 난생 처음 화장실에 앉아 문을 걸어 잠그고 눈물을 훔치고 있을 때, 화장실 문짝을 아예 뜯어내고 들어온 것도 우리엄마가 아니었다면 엄두도 못낼 파워풀한 액션이었다. 대학에 두 번씩이나 낙방하고 인생에 실패한 것처럼 좌절하여 화장실로 도피한 아들, 그 아들에게 할 말이 있자엄마는 문짝을 부순 것이다. 문짝 부수는 아버지는 봤어도엄마가 그랬다는 말은 그 전에도 그 후에도 듣지 못했다.
물리적 힘만이 아니었다. 한쪽 집안이 기운다며 결혼을 반대하는 친척 어른들을 향해 돈 때문에 사람 가슴에 못을 박으면 천벌을 받는다며 가족회의를 박차며 일어나던엄마, 그렇게 언제나 당차고 씩씩하고 강철 같던엄마가, 보육원에서 다섯 살짜리 소란이를 데려와 결혼까지 시킬 거라고 말한 지 얼마 되지 않은 어느 날 갑자기 뇌출혈로 쓰러졌다. 담당 의사는 깨어나도 식물인간이 될 거라 했지만엄마는 그나마 반신마비에 언어장애자가 됐다.
아들은 이제 삼십 중반을 넘어섰고 마주 앉아 세상 사는 이야기를 할 만큼 철도 들었는데, 정작엄마는 말을 못한다. 단 한 번도 성적표 보자는 말을 하지 않았고 단 한 번도 뭘 하지 말라는 말을 하지 않았으며, 화장실 문짝을 뜯고 들어와서는 다음 번에 잘하면 된다는 위로 대신에, 그깟 대학이 뭔데 여기서 울고 있냐고, 내가 너를 그렇게 키우지 않았다며 내 가슴을 후려쳤던엄마, 사실은 바로 그런엄마덕분에 정신적으로든 육체적으로든 그 어떤 종류의 콤플렉스로부터도 자유롭게 사는 오늘의 내가 있음을 문득 문득 깨닫는 나이가 되었는데, 이제엄마는 말을 못한다.
우리 가족들 중 아무도 알지 못하는 생면부지의 사람들이 병원으로 찾아와,엄마의 휠체어 앞에 엎드려 서럽게 울고 가는 걸 보고 있노라면, '엄마는 도대체 어떻게 사신 거냐' 고 물어보고 싶은 게 너무나 많은데 말이다.

원형극장 옛터에서 마을사람들은 어디서 왔는지 모르는 말라깽이 소녀 모모를 발견하고 그녀에게 삶의 터전을 마련해주었다. 모모는 남의 말을 귀기울여 듣는 능력을 지닌 소녀였다. 마을사람들은 모모에게 자신의 얘기를 함으로써 스스로를 뒤돌아보고 용기를 얻고 기쁨과 신념을 얻었다. 서로 다투는 사람들도 함께 모모에게 오면 화해의 기쁨을 얻었다. 아이들이 모모 앞에서 자신의 상상을 얘기하면 그들 앞에 상상의 세계가 펼쳐졌다.
모모에게는 늙은 도로 청소부 베포와 말재주꾼이며 여행안내원인 기기라는 두 친구가 있었다. 시간을 절약할 것을 마을사람들에게 일러주는 도시의 회색일당들은 시간의 저축은행 사원들이었다. 마을 사람들은 서서히 이들의 지배하에 들어갔고 이제 사람들은 모모를 찾아올 시간이 없어졌다. 마침내 모모는 옛 친구들을 찾아 나섰고 회색일당의 방해물이 되었다. 회색일당의 영향에 들어가지 않는 자들은 모모, 베포, 기기 그리고 모모를 찾아 원형극장으로 올라오는 아이들이었다.
모모가 회색일당의 수배인물로 위험해지자 이들로부터 모모를 지켜주기 위해 세쿤두스 미누티오스 호라 박사는 모모를 데려오기 위해 거북이 카시오페아를 보냈다. 거북이의 안내로 시간의 원천을 경험한 모모가 하루 만에 다시 옛터로 돌아오자 현실의 시간은 1년이 지났고 그 동안 모든 친구들은 이미 회색일당과 관련을 맺고 그들의 원칙에 따라 살아가고 있었다.
〈시간을 훔치는 도둑과, 그 도둑이 훔쳐간 시간을 찾아주는 한 소녀에 대한 이상한 이야기〉라는 부제의 이 동화소설에 대하여 엔데는 이 이야기를 들은 대로 기억에 따라 썼다고 고백하였다.

진화하는 한국의 카페-미디어아트와 만나다. ● 현대 사회는 미디어 사회라 해도 과언이 아니다. 인터넷의 보급이후 아이폰의 등장까지 이제 우리는 더 손쉽게 영상을 접하고 조작된 화면의 세계를 경험하게 되었다. 따라서 현대는 미디어의 세계이고 미디어는 실재의 현실보다 더 현실을 모방하고, 폭넓은 상상의 세계를 열어주고 있다. 미디어, 현실, 모방. 상상은 이제 낡은 단어가 되어 버린 지도 오래다. 미디어 아트는 현대 과학기술의 발전과 더불어 발전한 미술이다. 디지털아트라는 이름으로 새롭게 탈바꿈되어 다양한 기술적 실험들을 넘어서며 미디어 아트는 지금도 진화하고 있다.
나무그늘은 그 동안 회화를 선보이던 복합 문화공간이었다. 영등포와 강남 나무그늘이 그 대표적인 예였다. 2009년부터 진행된 나무그늘의 예술과의 만남은 이제 미디어아트와 새롭게 만난다. 나무그늘 삼청점은 올 10월 개관한 이후 통유리건물이라는 장점을 살려 미디어아트 기획전시를 선보여 왔다. 미술의 선봉에서 미술이 추구해야 할 가치들을 재고하고 확장시켜 나가는 영상과 대중공간의 만남은, 어쩌면 이 시대의 대중들이 원하는 가장 주목받고 사랑받을 수 있는 결합인지도 모른다.
본 2012 나무그늘 미디어 아트 쇼 "DREAMSCAPE"는 이러한 현대사회의 변화하는 시각적 욕구를 충족시키기 위하여 기획되었다. DREAMSCAPE, 즉 꿈같은 풍경은 바로 영상이 움직이며 우리의 시선을 자극하고 멈추는데서 찾아 낸 단어이다. 그 화려한 풍경은 우리를 설레이던 유년기의 추억으로 데려가며, 동화나 영화처럼 상상의 문을 열어 제친다. 본 전시는 끊임없이 진화하는 한국 카페에 선구적인 위치를 점하는 전시이다. 미디어는 우리의 꿈이다. 미래의 미술은 미디어를 통과하지 않으면 그 의미와 가치를 보여줄 수 없을 만큼 감동의 폭발력과 호소력을 내재하고 있다. 우리가 꿈꾸는 세상을 그대로 보여줄 수 있는 공간. 인간 뇌 속을 헤집고 들어가 그 세계를 들여다보는 듯한 세계가 바로 미디어아트 속에 들어있다. 본 전시를 통하여 진화하는 한국의 카페에는 미디어의 꿈과 희망이 담겨져 있음을 보았으면 한다. 카페의 낭만과 휴식은 미디어의 꿈을 입고 자라난다. 이 시대의 보석같은 7인의 미디어작가들을 만남으로써 그 꿈과 희망의 세계에 빠져 보길 바란다. ■ 辯 박옥생

Steven Paul Jobs (February 24, 1955 -- October 5, 2011) was an American businessman and inventor widely recognized as a charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs was co-founder and previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney.
In the late 1970s, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak engineered one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. Jobs directed its aesthetic design and marketing along with A.C. "Mike" Markkula, Jr. and others.
In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC's mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Apple Lisa (engineered by Ken Rothmuller and John Couch) and, one year later, of Apple employee Jef Raskin's Macintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs left Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets.
In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd, which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer. He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1 percent until its acquisition by The Walt Disney Company in 2006, making Jobs Disney's largest individual shareholder at seven percent and a member of Disney's Board of Directors.
In 1996, NeXT was acquired by Apple. The deal brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and provided Apple with the NeXTSTEP codebase, from which the Mac OS X was developed." Jobs was named Apple advisor in 1996, interim CEO in 1997, and CEO from 2000 until his resignation. He oversaw the development of the iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, and iPad and the company's Apple Retail Stores.
In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Though it was initially treated, Jobs reported of a hormone imbalance, underwent a liver transplant in 2009, and appeared progressively thinner as his health declined. In August 2011, during his third medical leave, Jobs resigned as CEO, but continued to work for Apple as Chairman of the Board until his death.
On October 5, 2011, he died in his Palo Alto home, aged 56. His death certificate listed respiratory arrest as the immediate cause of death, with "metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor" as the underlying cause. His occupation was listed as "entrepreneur" in the "high tech" business.

M&C Saatchi and Sam Brown have brought together the famous robotic duo to promote the greatest electrical store in our galaxy. C3P-O and R2D2 are seen wandering around the deserted Curry's store gazing at flat screen, playing video games and meeting other robots, well... just vacuum cleaners really. The spot was produced by Peter Montgomery at M&C Saatchi and James Howland at Rogue. MPC created a CG stunt for R2D2 and provided extensive compositing work.
The majority of the 2D work comprised of seamlessly constructing shots from multiple plates, in particular the Entrance opening wide, and the Screen shot, and removal and cleanup of droid rigs. In the opening shot of the spot, the building's exterior was also completely re-branded.
Although the majority of the shots captured the iconic droids in-camera, there were a couple that needed CGI. MPC built R2D2 from an initial model, and closely matched the hero in look and feel, referring to stills taken from on-set, and also original footage from Star Wars. For the falling-down shot, the 3D team animated to a plate of the 'stunt' droid's movements, and used on-set reference for lighting and texturing. For the Tip-toe shot, MPC added the legs, and animated to match the movement of the puppeteered droid.
Jean Clement Soret did the grade for the spot.
The spot will be on air in the UK on October 2010.

There is a structure of modern society where are dominated by complete authority and weak people are oppressed by each others. I have concerned some helpless things that are easily disappeared. It looks delicate but unconstrained personality from a child, cats on the road and a piece of paper like a junk and it might be destroyed immediately because it looked pure and so small. Observing it carefully. They left superficial home and fell but picked themselves up and continued to walk. I would like to mention about a forgotten phenomenon around by reconstruction of a part of society but considered shallowly. ■ HANGENE
